Erik Shellenhamer, CPA
Senior tax associate
Erik is a Senior Tax Associate and Financial Planning Advisor at Godsey & Gibb Wealth Management, where he supports individuals and families with tax preparation, tax strategy, and financial planning. As a CPA, he helps high-net-worth clients identify tax-saving opportunities and ensures their returns are timely, accurate, and compliant with current regulations. In addition, Erik also works closely with clients on holistic financial planning, developing strategies that address their long-term goals and retirement income needs. His work at Godsey & Gibb allows him to combine his genuine interest in finance with his personal desire to help others.
With over 13 years in the financial industry, Erik is effective at translating complex tax regulations into actionable strategies that support each client’s overall investment objectives and financial goals. This includes a focus on tax planning and optimization to minimize tax liabilities through allowable deductions, credits, and tax-loss harvesting. In addition, his approach includes an emphasis on retirement planning and strategies related to tax-efficient retirement savings, retirement income needs, and required minimum distributions. Erik’s strength lies not only in technical expertise, but in providing practical advice and explaining complex financial topics in ways clients can easily understand.
Before joining Godsey & Gibb in 2022, Erik supported both public and private companies in a variety of roles that included tax compliance, corporate financial planning and analysis, financial reporting, accounting, and auditing. Through these roles he developed budgets and forecasts, analyzed financial data, implemented and maintained internal controls, issued GAAP-compliant financial statements, and managed the full cycle of financial operations for corporations. This experience provided him with insight into addressing complex financial situations and using data to inform decisions.
Erik earned his Bachelor of Science in Accounting from Wesley College and is a Certified Public Accountant (CPA). In addition, he is currently pursuing a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER® certification.
Outside of work, Erik can be found spending time with his wife Shannon, their young twins Clara and Joshua, and their labradoodle, Jax. He enjoys outdoor activities such as hiking, camping, running, and golfing as well as visiting local breweries and exploring new places. When he is able, he gives back to the community and has previously volunteered as a coach with The First Tee of Greater Richmond.
